Rhinocaris ehlersi |
Silica formation |
David Thompson |
|
Submitted on 2008-06-09 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: There are four species of these large 'shrimp-like' animals in the Silica formation. This is an unusual picture as it shows this species from the top with both lateral plates, the axial ridge and prora with the rostrum broken off. This type of preservation is rare, normally only one of the lateral plates shows with the animal on its side. These show incredible iridescent colors when wet and just exposed but turn dull when dry.

Submitted on 2008-06-09 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: This is the second of the four species of Phyllocarid from the Silica. Unlike the previous photos, this species has clear patterns of lines in its lateral plates and tail pieces or somites. Also this shows one of the paired gastric teeth or mandibles used by Phyllocarids to eat their prey as shrimp and lobsters do today.

Silica formation |
David Thompson |
|
Submitted on 2008-06-09 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Milan, Washtenaw, MI
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: This believed to be the lateral plate of the third species of Phyllocarid from the Silica and shows a bit of the lateral ridge that is not present in other species of Phyllocarid from this formation. Due to the fragmented nature of the specimen however, this could also be part of one of the other species found in the Silica.
