Crinoid Calyx

Submitted by: Mike Topor
Taxon: Megistocrinus rugosus
Submit date: 2008-03-02
Location (approximate): Arkona, Lambton, ON
Stratigraphy: Hungry Hollow Formation
Age: Erian (Middle Devonian)
Submitter notes: Like the genus Dolatocrinus, Megistocrinus has great plate ornamentation variability which can make classification to the species level difficult. There are probably only 2 or 3 species in the Hungry Hollow member. Loose plates of Megistocrinus are common in the formation and even partial specimens should be collected due to the rarity of whole calyxes. An inflated nearly perfect specimen of M. rugosus that in itself, is rare for the Hungry Hollow member. This specimen is 30mm in diameter and 24mm high. This photo shows the side view.
