Eldredgeops rana crassituberculata Silica formation David Thompson

Submitted on 2009-06-06 by David Thompson

Location (approximate): Paulding, Paulding, OH

Strat unit: Silica formation

Submitter notes: This photo is of a nice Eldredgeops crassituberculata collected this year on a 'Friend's' field trip to the LaFarge quarry at Paulding, Ohio due to the courtesy of their management. The prepared block is 10' or 26 cm long by 7' or 18.5 cm at the widest and 5 3/4' or 15 cm at the narrower end. The Trilobite is 2 7/8' (7 cm) long and 1 1/2' or 4 cm across the cheek. Some small areas of pyrite adhere to the shell and look like shale.

Eldredgeops rana crassituberculata Silica formation David Thompson

Submitted on 2009-06-06 by David Thompson

Location (approximate): Paulding, Paulding, OH

Strat unit: Silica formation

Submitter notes: Since much of the material on this site is prepared, it was thought to show how this trilobite appeared when collected in the field. As you see, there is very little showing when many of these fossils are being collected.

Antholites alpenensis Thunder Bay formation David Thompson

Submitted on 2009-06-03 by David Thompson

Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI

Strat unit: Thunder Bay formation

Submitter notes: This tabulate coral attaches around the stem of crinoids which is believed to keep them off the substrate. These are delicate corals and there are fronds of Bryozoan in the coralite cups but are NOT part of the Antholites. This is from the same Thunder Bay Limestone locality for the Dolatocrinus just shown and collected the same day. This does look a bit like a Mayan god of rain!

Submitter notes: This view shows the crinoid stem and the thickness of the corals which are comparatively thin. The coral is 3/4' or 20 mm by 3/4' or 20 mm by 1/4' or 7 mm thick. I am sure many of my friends in FUMMP have better examples of this unusual coral they could show.
