Submitter notes: Preparation of this specimen was conducted by carefully removing pieces from the matrix and immediately gluing them back together. Once the entire specimen was removed a map was made of its original orientation. The specimen was then placed in a quaternary ammonium solution for cleaning. The solution caused the glue points to dissolve. Then the clean pieces were assembled using the map. The final orientation represents the specimen as it occurred in the matrix and not necessarily in its living position, which may or may not have been the same. The specimen is about 14 cm across at its widest point

Submitter notes: This is how the speciman was found & collected with a nice Nucleocrinus blastoid with several 'horn' corals and a head for a Phacops(?) trilobite right next to the blastoid. This was collected at Hungry Hollow but in the upper Widder beds of the formations. A U.S.of A. 10 cent pc. is for scale.

Submitter notes: This is another view in more detail of the Nucleocrinus blastoid from the Widder beds of Hungry Hollow. This shows the Phacops head to better advantage and the Heliophyllum coral behind them. The actual size of the blastoid is 1 cm. long exactly.

Botryllopora socialis Hungry Hollow formation John Topor

Submitter notes: Botryllopora is an encrusting bryozoan. It's favorite host is normally a horn coral. In this case, this large colony is attached to an unidentified matrix. The colony measures 65mm X 35mm.

Submitter notes: This fully inflated Devonian Blastoid, Heteroschisma canadense, was found in this matrix with fragmants of bryzoan fronds, crinoid stems & corals pieces too small to identify. A U.S. 10 Cent piece for scale. In older literature, this is often called by the name,'Codaster'

Submitter notes: The preservation of blastoids in the formation is exceptional. Clusters are very rare! This group of five larger specimens is indeed a find. The blastoids range in size from 10 - 13mm in height.

Submitter notes: Phacops iowensis southworthi eyes always contain 13 dorsoventral files and is only known from the Hungry Hollow member of the Widder formation where it is very rare. (The holotype is only a cephalon) The species of P. iowensis and E. rana co-exist in only a few Hamilton formations. This cephalon of P. iowensis southworthi is preserved a few millimeters atop a nearly complete specimen of E. rana rana. The cephalon measures 35mm wide and 23mm high. The E. Rana rana measures 35mm long

Submitter notes: H. juvene is much smaller in size and not as common as Heliophyllum halli halli in the Hungry Hollow member. The largest of the three specimens in the photo is 40mm long and 15mm in diameter. The smallest is about 15mm long and wide.

Submitter notes: These tabulate corals are commonly attached to crinoid stems which probably enabled them to stay above the sea floor to improve their chances for food. These specimens are approximately 25mm in diameter.

Cladochonus antiquus Hungry Hollow formation Mike Topor

Submitter notes: These somewhat common corals, like Antholites, are found attached to crinoid stems. Favorite hosts are the crinoids' Dolatocrinus and Megistocrinus. On some specimens, Cladochonus deforms the stem of it's host. It is not known how destructive this may have been, if at all, to the life of the crinoid host. The largest of the three pictured specimens is 30 X 40mm. The smallest colony is 22mm in diameter.

Submitter notes: This gastropod is common in the Hungry Hollow member. However, it is an exceptionally well preserved specimen. Many are found partially crushed or missing pieces of shell. They can range in size from a few millimeters up to about 35mm in diameter. This gastropod is about 31mm in diameter and 22mm high.

Submitter notes: Platyceras conicum is uncommon in the Hungry Hollow member. Complete specimens are hard to find as the pointed end is fragile and usually found broken off. This is an average size specimen. See scale in photo for size.

Alveolites goldfussi, Botryllopora socialis Hungry Hollow formation Mike Topor

Submitter notes: Alveolites is common in the Hungry Hollow member. This distinct colony coral is disc-shaped. This specimen is large for the species. Generally, younger specimens will exhibit a smoother surface. This un-cleaned coral shows patches of shale on its surface. A tiny colony of Botryllopora socialis has made a home on the shale near the center of the colony. You will need to zoom in to see it. The coral measures 135mm x 115mm and is approximately 45mm thick.
