Megistocrinus nodosus Thunder Bay formation Ken Dobson

Submitted on 2008-10-07 by Ken Dobson

Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI

Strat unit: Thunder Bay formation

Submitter notes: Collected in 1994, Ken had many years to enjoy this wonderful example of Megistocrinus before he died a few years ago. We collected this at Partridge Point in Alpena and the crinoid was completely covered with bryozoans that can still be seen covering the plate. Ken, at the time, was not optimistic about how this would turn out and until it was cleaned by Scott Vergiels, he did not know what a treasure he had.

Photo title: This magnificent complete crinoid was the pride of Ken Dobson's collection

Taxa present: Megistocrinus nodosus

Orthospirifer cooperi, Petrocrania hamiltonae, Hederella Silica formation Ken Dobson

Submitted on 2008-10-07 by Ken Dobson

Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH

Strat unit: Silica formation

Submitter notes: The muddy bottom of the Devonian seas over Michigan seemed to have few hard places for animals to attach and therefore almost any hard surface was prime real estate. This inarticulate has attached itself to the larger brachiopod for a safe place but this proved a mistake as they died togather. Some small bryozoan also have grown on both.
