Submitted on 2008-02-25 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Arkona, Lambton, ON
Strat unit: Traverse formation
Submitter notes: These two examples show an unusual form of the coral, Favosites turbinatus, in the form of crinoid calyxes! The bases have stem or what appears to be stem attachments then the coralites are forming a cup or calyx that mimics a crinoid.
On turning the form over (see next photo) the coral is very clear.

Athyris lens |
Traverse formation |

|
Submitted on 2008-02-25 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI
Strat unit: Traverse formation
Submitter notes: In the Genshaw formation there is a noted section containing these small inflated Athyris brachiopods along with small Atrypa species. There are thousands of these small brachiopods all of the same size and few showing any predatory borings or damage. Due to hydrocarbons in some nearby layers and the presence of water, they are a distinct and clear blue. Once dry, they are a flat gray. These were collected and are being kept in water to preserve the color which shows a bit in these photos.

Submitter notes: Another view of these small brachiopods. Where these are found they are all about the same size but in a deep layer. Considering the numbers found at exposed sites, there must be millions of these brachiopods in the formation. It is staggering to wonder what was going on at this time whereby so many brachiopods of almost one size (and age?) lived and died preserved this way. These are things I wonder about and make collecting so fascinating.

Submitted on 2008-02-24 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Petoskey, Emmet, MI
Strat unit: Traverse formation
Submitter notes: This is one of three views of this coral from the West side of Michigan near Petoskey in Emmet County, MI. The correlation of Northwestern and Northeastern goes by different names from one side of the state to the other. This was collected in the 'Kegomic Quarry' just to the East of the city of Petoskey. This is now a series of expensive condominiums and off limits to collecting. The 'Petoskey formation' here is comparable to the Potter Farm/Thunder Bay Fms. at Alpena according to the U. of M. Papers in Paleontology No. 7

Location (approximate): Petoskey, Emmet, MI

Submitter notes: This second view shows the base of the coral head from the Petoskey formation with a US 10 cent piece for scale. The actual size is 5 1/4' wide (13. cm) by 4 3/4' long (11.5 cm) by 2 1/2' (6.5 cm) high. This coral had been preserved in sandy matrix and appears weathered but is quite pristine.

Submitted on 2008-02-24 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Charlevoix, Charlevoix, MI
Strat unit: Traverse formation
Submitter notes: These three views are of an unusual bryozoan that is rectangular rather then stick-like or encrusting or fan shaped. It seems to be unique to the Devonian of Western Michigan and does not appear in the East I am aware of. These are in matrix but as individual pieces they can be triangular and look almost man-made. these are from the 'Whiskey Creek' formation of the Charlevoix Limestone
