Silica formation |

Submitted on 2011-05-04 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: This large brachiopod was infested by the worm, Cornulites, at an early stage. It also shows the tiny holes of the boring sponge, Clionoides, along what was once the lip of the Brachiopod. What is unusual here is that the worm died before the Brachiopod as the tube is truncated and the brachiopod continues to grow with a healing scar. The Brachiopod is 4.1 cm high by 5.9 cm wide.

Submitter notes: Here are two examples of Atactotoechus typicus Bryozoan on a horn coral and on the Brachiopod, Megastrophia. The small raised regular monticules are visible on these examples. The Horn Coral is from the Silica formation in Paulding, Ohio and the Megastrophia is from the Silica of Milan, Michigan.

Submitted on 2011-06-09 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI
Strat unit: Thunder Bay formation
Submitter notes: This is a Dolatocrinus barrisi with a Platyceras conicum attached to the tegmen. As J. Koniecki pointed out earlier in this listing, the Platyceras conicum is not listed in the species of the Alpena area but it is clear the the platyceras fauna was similiar to other areas of the Michigan Basin and this is another example. The crown and Platyceras are 1.54' or 3.9 cm tall and 1.24' or 3.3 cm wide. there are two additional views.

Submitter notes: This is a Dolatocrinus asterias complete crinoid with full crown, feeding arms and stem, both disarticulated and complete of about 5' or 12.5 cm in length. The entire plate is 12.5' or 18 cm tall by 5' or 12.5 cm wide. the caylx itself is only .5' or 1.5 cm wide and the crown is a total of 4.5 cm tall.

Submitter notes: This is a close up view of the small crinoid previously. The species of Dolatocrinus asterias is quite variable in the plate structure of the calyx and this is a young example so the plates may not be typical.

Stigmaria |
Saginaw formation |

|
Submitted on 2011-08-14 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Grand Ledge, Eaton, MI
Strat unit: Saginaw formation
Submitter notes: This is a root section of a Lycopod tree from the Pennsylvanian of central Michigan. The overall length of the root is
16.3 inches while the matrix is 10 inches long and about 3 inches deep. Rootlets can be seen going into the matrix. This is from the Lincoln Brick park near Grand Ledge and was collected in 1994. Lycopods were large trees that formed the deep swamps of the Pennsylvanian & this is probably from a Lepidodendron sp. All such root sections separated from the actual trees are labelled 'Stigmaria'

Submitted on 2011-08-21 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI
Strat unit: Squaw Bay formation
Submitter notes: This trace fossil is from the Squaw Bay formation of Alpena and is part of a larger piece. These trace fossils are attributed to a variety of causes from plant or algae fronds to worm feeding activity. The consensus seems to be for the systematic feeding activity of marine worms. This piece is about 18 inches long by 8 inches wide. A twelve inch ruler is for scale.

Submitter notes: This is another tiny pyritized crinoid from the Silica shale showing 11. mm of stem into cup that is 10.7 mm wide. The protective spines of this species did not protect it from the gastropod (possibly bucculentum sp.) from getting onto the tegmen.
