Submitter notes: This is a close up view of the small crinoid previously. The species of Dolatocrinus asterias is quite variable in the plate structure of the calyx and this is a young example so the plates may not be typical.

Silica formation |

Submitted on 2011-08-14 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: This is another tiny pyritized crinoid from the Silica shale showing 11. mm of stem into cup that is 10.7 mm wide. The protective spines of this species did not protect it from the gastropod (possibly bucculentum sp.) from getting onto the tegmen.

Submitted on 2011-11-05 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Sylvania, Lucas, OH
Strat unit: Silica formation
Submitter notes: This is the tiniest complete Eldredgeops (Phacops) trilobite I have seen or found. The eyes are so tiny I can not determine the species although it did come from Sylvania, Ohio. It is complete but only a few millimeters long as seen by the comparison with the U.S. Ten cent piece next to it. Far rarer then the larger trilobites this site is famous for.

Megistocrinus multidecoratus |
Thunder Bay formation |
David Thompson |
|
Submitted on 2011-11-05 by David Thompson
Location (approximate): Alpena, Alpena, MI
Strat unit: Thunder Bay formation
Submitter notes: This shows to good effect the varied decorations on the calyx of this species of Megistocrinus. This very large Caylx comes from Partridge Point in Alpena. Unfortunately the entire opposite side is covered with a very hard limey Bryazoan that completely obscures it and only this side, bottom and tegmen could be cleaned and seen.

Submitter notes: This species of Brachiopod, Leiorhynchus kelloggi, from the silica shale often has significant amounts of the original nacre or Mother of Pearl still visible and sparkling after 375 Million years. This example from Milan, Michigan has a large amount of the original shell still shining after all these millions of years!
